Clock In
How to clock in, clock out, and manage breaks from the employee app
The Clock In page is where you record your arrival and departure for each shift. Every time you start work, take a break, or finish for the day, you tap a button here. Your manager reviews and approves these records before they feed into payroll.
Before You Clock In
Allow Location Access
Hopshift uses your phone's GPS to confirm you are at your workplace. The first time you open the Clock In page, your browser will ask for permission to access your location.
Tap Allow when prompted. Without location access, you will not be able to clock in.
If you accidentally tapped "Deny", go to your phone's browser settings, find the Hopshift site, and reset location permissions to "Allow".
Photo Verification
If your employer has enabled photo verification, you will be prompted to take a selfie when clocking in. This is used as attendance proof. Point your front camera at your face and tap the capture button.
Clocking In
- Open the Hopshift app and tap Clock In in the bottom navigation.
- The page shows your current status (Not Started) and a map with your current location.
- Confirm your location pin is shown near your workplace.
- If photo verification is enabled, tap Take Photo and capture your selfie.
- Tap Clock In.
A timer starts and your status changes to Working.
Clocking In Outside Your Scheduled Shift
If you tap Clock In before or after your scheduled shift hours, a confirmation prompt appears:
"You are clocking in outside your scheduled shift. Do you want to continue?"
Tap Continue to proceed. The record will be visible to your manager with the actual time shown.
Taking a Break
When you are on an approved break:
- Tap Start Break on the Clock In page.
- Your status changes to On Break and a break timer starts.
- When your break is over, tap End Break to resume the working timer.
Break time is tracked separately from work time. Depending on your company's settings, break time may be unpaid and subtracted from your total hours.
Clocking Out
When your shift is over:
- Tap Clock Out on the Clock In page (or the home screen).
- A confirmation prompt appears showing your total working time.
- Tap Confirm to record your clock-out.
Your status returns to Not Started and the session is saved.
Always clock out at the end of your shift. If you forget, your manager can adjust the record, but unresolved missing clock-outs may affect your pay calculation. If you notice you forgot to clock out, submit a correction request on the Attendance page.
Geofencing
Your employer may have set up a geofence: a required distance from the workplace within which you must be located to clock in.
If you are outside the allowed radius when you tap Clock In, you will see a message saying you are too far from the location. Move closer and try again, or contact your manager if you believe your location is correct and the system is not recognising it.
Unclosed Sessions
If you closed the app without clocking out from a previous session, Hopshift will prompt you to close the previous session before starting a new one. You will be asked to confirm the clock-out time for the previous shift before proceeding.
